West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 November 2008

Stealth tax on tennis courts

COUNCILLOR Lewis has been singularly unresponsive as we have tried to reach a middle ground between the Cannons group, the council, and those of us who have played for years at Paddington with private coaches.
She has actively participated in raising punitive fees at Paddington tennis courts to those in the community who wish to be privately coached.
As someone who uses the tennis courts, this outrageous fee is yet another tax on me for the use of a public facility (which my taxes in part pay for).
At this time of financial pressure when the government is trying to ease the tax burden, does the council really want to be known for another stealth tax on residents?
And by the way, these tennis courts are often sitting empty during the morning and midday periods.
Why should it be a problem to use the courts more during these times? More use means more money to Cannons and the council.
There must be a middle ground.
