Bogus caller alert to old folk
DETECTIVES are hunting two con-artists who tricked their way into a Marylebone pensioner’s home and stole a large sum of money.
The victim, 87, who lives in Balcombe Street, answered his door to a man pretending to be a workman who wanted to check the water meter.
Once the man gained entry, he followed him into the kitchen and while he was clearing items from under the sink, the man let in an accomplice who stole two wallets, one containing more than 200 euros.
Detectives are warning elderly residents in the borough to be vigilant against the threat of the distraction burglars.
The main suspect is described as white, 5ft 8in, aged 42 to 45 with short brown hair. He spoke with a London accent and was wearing a workman’s style long-sleeved, high-visibility yellow jacket.
DC Greg Rogers of Westminster burglary squad said: “Unfortunately just a week before this incident the water board had been carrying out work in the street so the gentleman thought the visit was genuine. All senior citizens should always ensure that any strangers coming to their door have the correct identification and, in addition, telephone the relevant organisation to check the caller is genuine.”
