West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 5 December 2008
Library now a haven for layabouts
• CHARING Cross Library used to be a wonderful place. I can remember it from the 1960s.
It has become in recent times a monument not only to anti-intellectualism but a sop for beggars, vagrants, homelessness and prostitutes.
An encounter the other day really took the biscuit and has prompted me to complain.
The internet section of this library is the worst and on this particular day in addition to the other hangabouts sitting around there was a female and a male taking up two of the seats but not using the machines. Instead they were necking and fooling around.
When I asked them to vacate they thought it was a real hoot and, while relinquishing one of the chairs, brought in another chair so they could continue necking where they were.
The smugness of the attitude was what really got me.
The smugness of idiots, bullies, prostitutes and layabouts in London has to be one of the real great conundrums of the 21st century. Sandra Shevey
