West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 9 January 2009
Don’t distract from the debate
• CONCERNING the fatal road traffic accident in Abbey Road on November 4, it is wholly disingenuous of Councillor Danny Chalkley to assert that even had the parking camera been switched on, it would not have prevented the accident (this states the obvious), and that it is “distasteful and disrespectful” for the accident to be used to open yet again debate on the council’s obscene preoccupation with making money out of parking.
The accident is not being so used. However, it manifested something not generally known to the public – that the camera is only being used to generate parking revenue, and it is this that has quite properly generated the debate.
Indeed, it is the councillor who is being distasteful and disrespectful, in that he is trying to use the circumstances of this tragic accident to divert public attention from the council’s dubious and avaricious parking policies. Iain MacMaster.
