West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 30 January 2009
Dozens of readers have written to tell us how strongly they oppose Westminster’s motorcycle parking fee.
• WE all know that this is a tax imposed on motorcyclists to raise funds.
This tax is anachronistic, unjust and profoundly against any schemes to limit pollution.
Sandro Batelli, via emailq Bikes alleviate congestion, plain and simple and they also cause less pollution. If anything Westminster should be paying people to park rather than the reverse. This is a pathetic stealth tax and nothing more so please stop all these lame excuses and lies. Simon Leigh
(someone who used shop in Westminster but won’t again until this nonsense is stopped) via email
• Why is Boris Johnson encouraging the use of scooters and motorcycles by opening up bus lanes to them yet Westminster council (the only authority in the world that deems fit to charge two-wheelers for parking) is discouraging their use by charging for parking?
C’mon Boris, flex those muscles and scrap this daft idea! Chris Webb, Highbury
• I bought a motorbike to ease congestion and make my life easier and I don’t want to be penalised for bringing my bike into Westminster.
As for Westminster providing more spaces and better safety –it’s not true. I’ve still had damage to my motorbike (wing mirrors etc) while paying to park in these “improved” spaces. This stealth tax needs to be removed immediately. Stop penalising the people who are working or visiting Westminster. Natalie Hallam, via email
