West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 6 February 2009
Support our local enterprise
• DURING a trading period such as now there is a real need for local support of new enterprises. While one can understand the concerns of the local church, it seems strange that a business (Fleet River Bakery/Deli) would be “hell” to live with (‘Take a walk!’ Deli booze plan next to church is thrown out, January 16).
Delicatessens of this nature tend to have high prices which reflect not only the quality of their stock but also the quality of their clientele.
The homeless are not renowned for their discerning tastes, rather, their tastes are dictated by price. When a two-litre bottle of strong cider costs 99p from a local 24-hour store it is very doubtful that an alcoholic of limited means would rather spend £3.50 for a litre of fine Normandy cider.
Yet this is what has been suggested in opposition to the proposed granting of a liquor licence.
There is a very real problem of late-night drunks and their propensity to urinate on people’s front steps. Choosing to punish new ventures for the shortfalls of councils to finance public conveniences is very harsh. It must be remembered that the Fleet River Bakery is a bakery first and foremost, and that a new-born child will be living above the establishment.
It seems somewhat hypocritical to criticise Fleet River Bakery’s proposal to play music when that is exactly what the church does.
It would be best for all if the church and Fleet River Bakery could coexist and work for a more pleasant area to live in. It is far too easy to blame others for endemic problems such as homelessness and for knee-jerk reactions to derail promising new enterprises. CHARLES DEAN
