West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 13 February 2009
Centre is left high and dry
• MANY thanks for your report on the appalling level of disrepair that the sports centre has been allowed to fall into (West End Extra, February 6).
Camden has very few sports centres in the south of the borough and I know residents cherish the opportunity to swim at the Oasis.
It’s a rare gem in central London in that it offers users the opportunity to swim outdoors.
While Camden Council has a major investment planned into Kentish Town baths, your report shows that the Oasis is in serious risk of being closed. When Kentish Town baths are receiving a gold-plated refurbishment, the Oasis is receiving little or no money.
Many would suggest that the ruling Liberal Democrat/Conservative administration is investing so much money in Kentish Town for electoral purposes. The Liberal Democrats misrepresented Labour’s plans for Kentish Town baths as there was never any plan to close them.
In putting all their eggs in one basket they have allowed our valued leisure facilities to go into rack and ruin.
I hope they present a plan on saving the Oasis as a matter of urgency. CLLR Jonathan Simpson
