‘56’ sexual health clinic set to open during weekends
A NEW sexual health clinic set to open in the heart of Soho will become only the second in London to be open during weekends.
The state-of-the-art HIV and sexual health centre in Dean Street will replace the old Victoria Clinic at the South Westminster Centre when it opens its doors at the beginning of March.
Situated next door to the Soho Community Centre, and run by Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Trust, it will offer a full range of services including a walk-in clinic for young people, one-hour HIV testing and emergency contraception provision.
The centre, named 56 Dean Street, will also open three evenings a week.
The Victoria Clinic will close for good at 5pm on Wednesday.
Speaking when planning permission was granted last summer, Dr Alan McOwan, service director for sexual health and lead clinician at the Victoria Clinic, said: “Rapidly increasing rates of sexually transmitted infections mean that it is important for sexual health services to be as accessible as possible, which is why we wanted our new centre to be in Soho.
“I am glad to say that the days of sexual health clinics as the Cinderella services of the NHS hidden away at the back of hospitals – out of sight and out of mind – are well and truly over.”
