West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 20 February 2009
After-hours progress
• I AM writing in response to your story “After-Hours School’s Out” (February 13). Contrary to what your report claimed, Westminster is not “failing dismally” to offer the full range of extended services such as after-school activities, childcare and support for parents.
In fact, we are closing the gap on the national average as the latest figures show that 70 per cent of our schools are now providing these services.
While we acknowledge there is more work to be done, I would like to reassure families across the city that we are working directly with headteachers to build on what we have already achieved.
We are making steady progress and only last week another school, Paddington Academy, joined the other five secondary schools that already provide the full range of services.
We are confident that we can deliver the extended schools agenda.
Michael O’Connor
Strategic Director for Children and Young People
