West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 27 February 2009
Road lobby ahead!
• SHARED space – mixing pedestrians with moving vehicles – is already in evidence in Sloane Square and is soon to be applied to Exhibition Road.
We are also told that abolishing segregation enables pedestrians and the motorists to integrate, for the walking public can assist in taming speeding and potentially dangerous drivers.
Traffic engineers now routinely claim that shared use is at the forefront of current thinking on how best to utilise road space.
Some road users seem to have no conscience about stealing pedestrians’ right of way. Shared space is just an excuse of the road lobby to enable cars to be driven where they had previously been banned.
Shared space will cause many hazards. Disabled people, notably the blind, will be put at great risk, especially if the kerbstones that traditionally separate walkers from drivers are removed. I understand that shared space is being proposed without any consultation whatsoever with disability groups. Antony Porter
