The official car of Lord Mayor Louise Hyams evades a ticket despite parking on double yellow lines in Soho |
It’s one way for her... Lord Mayor parks on double yellow lines in the wrong direction
IF ever you needed proof that some people are above the law, this picture is it.
A West End Extra reader captured on camera the moment the Lord Mayor’s car, distinguished by its crest and “WE 1” number plate, turned the wrong way into a one-way street in Soho before parking illegally on double yellow lines.
No parking ticket was issued.
Transport chiefs say police gave the Lord Mayor, Louise Hyams, special permission to go down the street as she was guest of honour at the unveiling of a plaque for comedy legend Peter Cook.
Martin Low, director of transportation at Westminster Council, said: “At the time in question Bateman Street and that part of Greek Street between its junctions with Soho Square and Old Compton Street were closed to normal traffic due to a major public event attended by the Lord Mayor as a guest of honour.
“The Lord Mayor’s chauffeur was instructed by a police officer to move the official car into Bateman Street due to congestion in nearby Greek Street where the event too place.
“This complied with normal practice and procedures at special events when temporary controls are put in place and the police and event marshalls help direct pedestrians and traffic.” |
