West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 6 March 2009
Berwick Street on Wednesday
So why didn’t the Lord Mayor receive a ticket?
• I READ with interest the article relating to the mayor’s car being parked in Bateman Street (It’s one way for her… Lord Mayor parks on double yellow lines in the wrong direction, February 27).
I was further interested in what Martin Low, director of transportation at Westminster City Council, said in response to the matter.
He said: “At the time in question Bateman Street and that part of Greek Street between its junctions with Soho Square and Old Compton Street were closed to normal traffic due to a major public event attended by the Lord Mayor as a guest of honour…”
This implies that if a street is officially closed, then parking restrictions on the closed street are also suspended.
I attach a picture of Berwick Street on Wednesday (March 4) closed for water replacement works. Are parking restriction in force or not?
Perhaps Mr Low can clarify this vexing question as it appears from his statement that any officially closed street also includes suspension of parking regulations in that street.
Failing that could he say why the mayoral car was not ticketed? TREVOR LANGFORD
