Closer than ever to a school south of the
Euston Road

• FURTHER to the article (‘Hypocrisy’ of new school hit by 2014 delay, April 10), let me say this once more and very clearly: we are the closest we have been in decades to having a secondary school south of Euston Road and this is unreservedly good news!
What is more, Uriah Heep, who for well over a century was employed by the council to write reports to the executive, has finally been shown the door.
The South of the Euston Road Campaign identified the Wren Street site (pictured) as having the potential for a small (below recommended size) four-form-of-entry secondary school, akin to a couple being developed elsewhere in London.
On April 1 Camden’s executive took a decision which secures the potential use of the site for a school.
At the same time, the government (Department for Children, Schools and Families) and the council have agreed to investigate further the need for school places in the central London area in 2016 and beyond to assess whether additional places are required.
Council officers and government officials will be undertaking this work jointly, in consultation with the campaign.
Once a need for additional places has been identified, the DCSF has made clear that Building Schools for the Future funding will be provided to develop the new school.
Since the executive meeting on April 1 council officers have been in touch with the government to discuss the arrangements for the pupil place planning work.
This needs to take place before further detailed work on the Wren Street site can be progressed.
We will also be holding a meeting soon for residents near the Wren Street site, together with local ward councillors, to discuss their concerns.
There is strong cross-party support for this project and it is moving forwards.
