West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 01 May 2009

Charitable harassment

I AM sure that most people strongly object to keep on having to deal with the aggressive harassment of charity fundraisers.
They appear in all parts of London but are particularly annoying around South Bank, Strand and other adjoining areas.
I give quite freely to charities on my own free will, but strongly object to the tactics used by this new type of fundraiser.
They do not rattle a box but instead pursue you along the pavement trying to get you to talk to them.
It is fatal to say anything (even No!) since they will seize on this to open a conversation.
One must stay silent and continue walking.
Presumably these fundraisers work for a company who employ them on behalf of the charities, so to them obviously a good earner.
They are a menace to everybody including tourists and legislation should be introduced to make their antics illegal. It was a gross error of judgment to put these people on the streets!
