West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 01 May 2009

Pedestrians lose out with light work

ONE Boris Johnson flagship election pledge is now being put in place, Transport for London have so far “reviewed” the traffic light phasing at 150 locations across London, with the aim of “smoothing the traffic”.
Initial figures on the retimed lights show a worrying anti-pedestrian trend.
In 41 cases the time for pedestrian crossing each hour has been reduced.
In 25 of these cases the cycle time has also increased, meaning pedestrians will have to wait longer and get less time to cross.
A relatively small number of crossings have been reviewed but we could soon see a significant number of pedestrian crossings where Londoners are left with a shorter time to cross the road or left waiting for longer for the green man to appear.
If you notice changes or difficulties at any of your local crossings, please let me know.
