West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 15 May 2009
Clean streets
• EVERY day we appear to be inundated with surveys, some interesting, some bizarre and some just plainly inaccurate. Recently a travel company issued a survey which claimed their research showed tourists had named London the dirtiest city in Europe.
But Westminster has an unrivalled reputation for the cleanliness of its streets. A recent independent Capital Standards inspection showed only 4 per cent of streets in Westminster contained litter and a Mori poll revealed 91 per cent of people are satisfied with street-cleaning in Westminster.
Last year the council was commended five stars in the British Cleaning Council’s “Cleanest City” and is the only local authority to have been consistently shortlisted every year since the competition began in 1988.
We will persist in providing clean streets to enable everyone to enjoy Westminster, which is a living city in every sense.
Cllr Danny Chalkley
Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport
