Sexual health clinic opens doors
A NEW sexual health clinic in the heart of Soho has been opened by Lord Darzi.
The HIV and sexual health centre at 56 Dean Street is only the second NHS service in the capital to open at weekends, and bosses hope it will smash the stigma that stops people going to get checked out.
It replaces the old Victoria Clinic at the South Westminster Centre and offers a full range of services including a walk-in clinic for youngsters, one-hour HIV testing and emergency contraception provision.
The centre, run by Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust, will also open three evenings a week.
Alan McOwan, clinical director at 56 Dean Street, said: “We want to move firmly away from the sterile and dull environments that are all too often associated with sexual health clinics and services.
“With the number of sexually transmitted infections continuing to rise we wanted to break down the stigma of visiting a sexual health clinic.
“The colours, finishes and quality of materials and furnishings used at 56 Dean Street have created an inviting, comfortable and reassuring environment.
“We want people to feel welcome, and this unique look and feel will allow us to do that.” |
