West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 29 May 2009
A better deal for all
• I WAS disappointed to see that Dr Ian Rowley has been appointed Westminster’s “housing czar” but not really surprised (New housing boss ‘Is like Alan B’Stard’, May 22). For decades, it appears to me that the Tories have engaged in a programme of social engineering to protect what now seems to be an unassailable position in control of the council, by selling off council houses and reducing, therefore, the social housing provision in the borough.
They have reinforced this by encouraging luxury development in some parts of the borough while allowing the social housing provision to be put in more distant regions where property prices are lower, the net result being a two-tier Westminster.
Who better than Councillor Rowley to continue in this vein?
Westminster City Council say that Cllr Rowley’s views are his own but they seem remarkably close to the essence of Tory council policy.
The council should be ashamed of the divided society within it, especially considering how much wealth is created within the borough.
Everyone deserves a better deal in Westminster, not just the developers and big business.
The Conservatives should bear this in mind; with the current upheaval in British politics maybe they can no longer take their comfy position of power for granted. Mark Blackburn
