Street dancers perform for crowds on the pedestrianised Oxford Street at the weekend |
Driven out! Oxford Street goes traffic free
HUNDREDS of thousands of shoppers flocked to Oxford Street at the weekend for the West End’s first-ever spring traffic-free day.
The pedestrian paradise brought a festival atmosphere to the iconic street, with a giant pass the parcel and kids’ playground among the attractions.
The event, which generated an extra £50million in sales, was organised by the New West End Company (NWE), a group representing retailers in the West End. It coincided with the 250th anniversary of Hamleys and the centenary of Selfridges.
NWE boss Richard Dickinson said: “Today’s event has involved six months of planning and the hard work of over 100 people. We hope that it gave Londoners a reason to rediscover the West End.” |
