West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 5 June 2009
Safety demands real cycle routes
• IF Boris Johnson wants safe cycling in central London, it is essential to provide separate cycle routes.
These would make it safer for pedestrians too. It can be very difficult to get across roads when having to watch out not only for cars, at one speed, but almost invisible cyclists as well, travelling at very different speeds.
And where we are having “shared surfaces” imposed on us, it can be a real nightmare for pedestrians to try to “catch the eye” of both cyclists and motorists simultaneously, in order to negotiate crossing the road.
It would be great to have mainly cyclists on our roads.
Drastically reducing the numbers of other vehicles would surely result in an upsurge in the numbers of cyclists. V St Clair , via email
