Shows go on! Square celebrates recession-busting theatres
HUNDREDS of thousands of theatre lovers descended on Leicester Square for a medley of show tunes over the weekend.
Jason Donovan, Jerry Springer and Billy Flynn were among the stars who put in an appearance at West End Live, the free stage extravaganza organised by Westminster Council to promote Theatreland.
Councillor Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster Council, said: “Theatreland makes a vital contribution to the capital’s economy and attracts visitors from across the globe who stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and, of course, shop in the West End.
“Compared to the rest of the country, the West End has proved relatively resilient to the recession largely thanks to foreign visitors. The theatre industry has just celebrated its most successful year ever and I am confident given the quality and variety of shows its success will continue.” |
