West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 3 July 2009
Suspicions?
• AT one point the article read that “…while society at large might be suspicious of their (home educators) motives…”. In my opinion this insinuation is not true. The public are usually intrigued by home education but an initial reaction is not suspicion.
People usually have many questions and once they have the answers are generally full of admiration for the parents that choose to take the responsibility of educating their child outside of the school system. Many can see the great benefits of this choice, even if they don’t home educate themselves. Even individuals who do not fully understand home education still tend to support the idea that freedom for parents to choose the type of education provided for their child should be upheld. The public don’t seem to be suspicious of home education but the government is.
They have been attempting to scaremonger regarding home education and are currently conflating education and welfare issues.
They have been trying, without success, to link home educators to child abuse and persuade the public that these suspicions are valid.
The home educating community sincerely hope the public don’t fall for this manipulation as ultimately the control that government seek over this section of society. TINA ROBBINS
