West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 3 July 2009
Give peace a chance
• ONCE upon a time, and for some years until recently, Soho Square was a peaceful haven of green in Soho; a rarity. What do we have now? Ignoring the noise and dirt of the Crossrail workings, we can hardly be said to have much peace.
Frequently, the square seems to be let out to commercial organisations, promoting various products, usually with loud beat music.
I recall one day when a Donna Summer track boomed repeatedly across the square for hours on end. We now have a piano – no doubt gentle peaceful music could have its place – but it seems to have stimulated noisy radios in the square.
One afternoon, in addition, there was some amplified calling of the religious. And, of course, with the humble rake abandoned, we also have to suffer the noisy leaf-blowing equipment.
This is not a (quiet) call for the square never to be used for the occasional noisy festival. It is a call, though, for the square to be recognised as being, in general, a place for some peace. About the only place in Soho. PETER CAVE
