Staff at the Real Greek with the new menus
Greek first eatery to count calories

ITS inventor says she is setting “an example to the industry” but for those of us to whom body politics means celebrating our multifarious shapes and sizes, a Covent Garden restaurant’s decision to include a calorie count beside every dish is tantamount to food fascism.
From this week, The Real Greek in Long Acre will be the first in the UK to list the exact calorie content of every meal on the menu.
From the Pandora’s box, a Cos salad at 42 calories, to the minotaur’s feast, 819 calories’ worth of soutzouki, every single gram is accounted for.
The restaurant’s managing director, Liz Williams, says she wanted to be the first to take the Food Standards Agency commitment to reduce obesity onto the dining room floor.
“Other restaurants have done trials, but we thought it was a really good idea and just went straight ahead,” she added. “It helps that we are a Greek restaurant and not a burger chain. They might be nervous about doing something like this.
“I’m not sure if people will start ordering differently. It’s too early to say. We will probably review our menu after a few months, but I expect people will still eat the same.”
