Playing in safety
• YOU report local opposition to plans by CityWest Homes to build luxury flats on a play space in Luxborough Street (Playground to make way for new flats, July 24). Speaking in defence of the proposal to build on the play space, Councillor Philippa Roe, Westminster City Council’s cabinet member for housing, says that the plan “will include the creation of a brand new playground just metres away from the existing poor quality open space on the estate”.
Cllr Roe should have added that the proposed site for the new playground is half the size of the existing space and located in a secluded corner of Luxborough Tower’s car park.
Local residents and police officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods Team are in favour of retaining the present location precisely because it is in full view of nearby buildings and passers by, thereby providing young people with a safe environment in which to play. SUE ROBINSON
