Uniform rules not ok
• I HAVE just read that the average cost of school uniforms is now £375, owing to egotistical rules that they can only be bought from one supplier. So what becomes of the argument that they save parents money? Without them, they’d have more money to spend on other things. Like decent gear.
At the very least, if all schools have a uniform, what becomes of freedom of choice? Some of the top schools, St Paul’s Girls, Camden Girls, Queen’s College, manage without them.
Did Colin Hall at Holland Park (Fashion parades, uniforms and snobbery in education, Letters July 31) and his equivalent at Pimlico consult anyone before bringing them back?
I believe that heads should be elected by the staff rather than appointed by the governors and that all school rules should require the agreement of an elected school council.
Summerhill has a far more radical system and the happiest pupils in Britain.
