Fountains provide a new West End gateway
• FOLLOWING the revamp of the fountains at Marble Arch the West End now has a new iconic gateway to Oxford Street which is proving popular with residents and visitors.
You only have to visit Marble Arch on a sunny day to see how it has boosted this part of town and we are pleased that so many people are taking advantage of this new haven in the centre of the city, and are going there to sit and enjoy themselves.
Many people visit the fountains, which when they burst into life invigorate the area and make it look fantastic. None of the world’s best known fountains, from the Trevi fountains in Rome to London’s very own in Trafalgar Square, are fenced off and we do not intend to erect barriers at Marble Arch. Hiding the fountains in this way would defeat the point of creating a beautiful water feature. Cllr Robert Davis
Deputy Leader
Westminster City Council
