Boost for St Mark’s campaigners
A POWERFUL advisory group of church leaders have dealt a hammer blow to a multi-millionaire developer’s proposals to shut down a historic church in Mayfair and turn it into a luxury health spa.
The Church Commissioners have submitted a report to an up-coming planning inquiry on St Mark’s Church in North Audley Street warning its owners, the Diocese of London, they must not sell the site to a private developer.
The commissioners, who manage all the church assets, have filed a report to the panel stating that the decision should be based on what is the most “suitable use, and not best price”.
Save St Mark’s Action Group co-ordinator Kirk Mitchell said: “What this means is that the Church Commissioners intend holding the diocese to account. They’re saying the law prevents the diocese from just shrugging off its legal responsibilities to the community, by cashing in on lucrative buildings to prop up failing parishes.”
A final decision on the plan will be made at the planning appeals court on October 7.
