West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 21 August 2009
Value of real estate
• I can’t help noticing a common theme in many of your headline stories right now. The Chelsea Barracks site, St John’s Wood Barracks, “Noho” and now Luxborough Street – all precious pieces of real estate where essentially there’s a battle between the interests of developers (often with the support of Westminster City Council) and those of residents.
Post credit crunch, there has to be a change in our attitude to space, and its preciousness in London. Greed and over-development must now become a thing of the past. Our city and its people must be allowed to breathe. So I ask you, the city council to do all you can to help make Noho “London’s most sought after allotment” (August 14), find a use for Chelsea Barracks which genuinely benefits us all, keep the other barracks in St John’s Wood for the horses and find a more suitable place for a new apartment block than the playground in Luxborough Street.
