College takes its students up a level
ONE school where pupils are guaranteed to be happy with their
A-level results is Davies Laing and Dick College in Marylebone.
Most of the 380 students at the independent college enrol to try and boost their grades after being disappointed the first time around.
With no more than eight students to a classroom, and intensive teaching tailored to getting quick results, DLD has a remarkable track record of being able to bump grades up by two places, sometimes in little more than a term.
As well as regular classes from GCSE to A-levels, which can be taken in more than 40 subjects at different rates of learning, giving it one of the widest curriculums in the capital, the college opens its doors during the Christmas and Easter holidays for special cramming courses.
Parents who would like their children’s revision supervised, rather than the usual half-hearted teenage noon start and technological distractions, have long put their faith in DLD to get results and win university places, especially if mock exam results are underwhelming.
Five years ago, the college moved from its Notting Hill campus, where it had been since the 1930s, to a state-of-the-art building in Marylebone Lane.
Now it boasts a drama and music centre worthy of a specialist performing arts college.
David Lowe, who has been principal at the college for the past two years said: “We are the oldest college of our kind and since moving to our new campus in Marylebone we’ve got some of the most professional facilities that I know of.
“We focus on determination, the quality that enables people to make a difference in life, learning that enables them to grow and develop; and distinction, the quality that makes each of us individual. We have small class sizes and great teachers and a great record of boosting grades.
“It’s currently harder to get into university than ever before, so more people are coming to us to try and make that crucial improvement.”
