West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 2 October 2009
Undermining our peaceful haven
• THE silver tongue, or silvered printed word of Councillor Lee Rowley (Looking after Soho Square, Letters, September 25) regarding the amenity is depressing, though unsurprising.
Yes Soho Square should be “a haven amid the hustle and bustle of the West End”.
Yet when the councillor defends “public events in the square that benefit locals and visitors” he is defending rashes of marketing projects that have damaged the grass, often restricting access to the square and certainly undermining the square as a peaceful haven.
The events have frequently involved loudspeakers bellowing out some inane beat music; I remember hours of the same track of a Donna Summer on repeat, presumably promoting something – maybe ear-plugs.
Let us hear how many events the council has authorised over the last year, how they have been chosen, what restrictions are placed on such events.
And let’s hear what money is involved, what damage to the square has resulted and the extent to which consultations occur with the people who use the square as a haven. Peter Cave, Meard Street, Soho
