‘Fitting’ heritage tribute for M&S flagship
THE Marks and Spencer flagship store in Oxford Street has been granted Grade II-listed status by English Heritage.
The Pantheon store was custom designed for the esteemed retailer in 1938.
Much of the original interior including walnut counters, teak doors and ornate ceilings was lost to bomb damage during the Blitz.
But its façade, which English Heritage has called a “fantastic” part of the street’s history, survived.
Designed by architect Robert Lutyens, its prominent West End location was a statement of intent by the retailer as it expanded during the 1920s and 1930s.
Culture minister Barbara Follett said the building provided a “beautiful focal point for the lower end of Oxford Street”.
A spokesman for M&S said: “It is fitting that the store’s classic façade is preserved during our 125th birthday celebrations.” |
