The Strand Palace Hotel |
Birthday treat has top hotel rooms at just £1
THE legendary Strand Palace Hotel celebrated its 100th birthday by giving away 100 rooms for 100p.
The West End hotel, currently undergoing refurbishment due for completion next June, marked its centenary with a competition give-away. First opened in 1909 it was soon to become famous for both its art deco and as a fashionable place for society to assemble.
Characters connected to the hotel include the father and son team who looked after the coal-fired boilers to the American armed forces who stayed at the hotel when it was commissioned as an official rest residence.
Perhaps most famous of all is a Strand Palace hotel room key, now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, found in the fields of Normandy and dating from the First World War.. |
