A great place to live and do business

Newly elected Conservative
councillor for the West End ward, Jonathan Glanz, outlines his vision of the future for residents and businesses

I AM delighted to have been chosen by the voters of the West End ward to represent them as one of their ward councillors.
Having lived and worked in the West End for over 20 years I am well aware of its special atmosphere and the pleasure of living in the centre of such a vibrant city.
However such pleasure can be destroyed by illegal, inconsiderate or anti-social behaviour.
I will try to maintain a proper balance between residential amenity and business activities and to promote the West End as being a great place in which to live and to do business.
I am well aware that many parts of the West End suffer from the stress of large numbers of licensed premises operating for long periods within the day.
This can cause unacceptable disturbance for local residents. I will work on behalf of residents to ensure that badly managed licensed premises are brought into line.
I will work with the police to ensure that crime and anti-social behaviour is addressed and minimised. I will work with the council to increase the number and quality of homes, both social and private so that the West End becomes more of a residential area, thereby by supporting local services and its unique village atmosphere.
Local businesses need to be encouraged.
Berwick Street Market needs to be revitalised so it can regain its poise as one of the best local markets serving its immediate community and beyond.
Green thinking now permeates all the activities the council, which is set to reduce its carbon footprint and energy consumption.
I will encourage this process as well as specifically supporting schemes for more trees, vertical gardening, roof gardens and allotments.
I want to preserve and improve our parks and safeguard them for the growing residential community. I will try to ensure that commercial functions within the parks do not destroy them as green and quiet oases within the ward.
I want to ensure that local services including education, medical services and leisure are of a high standard and are sufficient to meet the needs of today’s community and new residents.
Marshall Street Leisure Centre is due to reopen next year and I will encourage the provision of further leisure and sporting facilities within the ward.
With a growing residential population it is essential that there are affordable and well-run facilities available to all age groups.
I will use my experience in infrastructure and street furniture to ensure that we improve our built environment and make it worthy of a world class city.
I want to improve public transport and work to minimise the adverse affects of Crossrail.
I wish to see underutilised sites redeveloped in a sensitive and sustainable way. There are some major redevelopments due to take place within the ward and I hope that these will act as a catalyst for improvement.
At long last it appears that Ham Yard is going to coming forward for redevelopment and I will work to ensure that it is worthy of the city and that the developers provide improvements in and around their site.
I am really looking forward to the challenge of what is a complex and varied ward.
The West End is lucky enough to have some of the greatest theatres, galleries and educational institutions of the world within its boundaries and I want to make sure that facilities in all these areas are available to all the ward.
I also want to ensure that I, as a councillor, am available locally.
My email is: jg@45west.com and my phone number is 07538 824 448. I look forward to hearing from anyone within the ward who has an issue they wish to discuss and I will do my best to help.
In short I will work to make the West End a better place for all.
