Fryer panned? Shock art wins blessings
BLOOD is running down his hands and feet, full of pain and sadness the crucified looks down at visitors. But nailed to a cross is not the Messiah, it’s a huge, life-like ape.
Meanwhile, a black Jesus Christ figure is being executed on an electric chair. Paul Fryer’s provocative pieces are part of the contemporary art exhibition The Age of the Marvellous at the former Holy Trinity Church in Marylebone. It might hurt religious feelings, but not those of the visitors present. “I don’t find it offensive. It shows the martyrdom of nature”, said Dave Miller from Primrose Hill. “Extremely powerful imagery. It’s only offensive in terms of what we’re doing to the world,” said Peter Dodd from Middlesex.
Ica Sauvignier from Cologne, Germany, loved Fryer’s art. He said: “Evolution tells us that we stem from the ape, even if the Catholic Church refuses to believe that. A fantastic show”. |
