Act now to save climate
• AT the next meeting of the council on November 4 Labour are asking all 60 councillors to agree the following motion; “Westminster City Council notes the need to take urgent action to tackle climate change and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, and welcomes the launch of the Westminster Carbon Alliance to encourage businesses and institutions in the city to act. We call on the government to press for an ambitious, effective and fair global deal at the Copenhagen summit. The council therefore resolves: • to sign up to the 10:10 campaign; • to commit to reduce its total carbon emissions by 10 per cent in 2010; • to instruct the chief executive to report to the first full council meeting in 2011 on the progress made.”
It is vital that the city council acts now to reduce its carbon emissions by 10 per cent over the next year and to give a lead to all public and private organisations in Westminster.
Climate change is one of our biggest challenges. Every organisation and individual has a key part to play. It is not something which can be left to government alone and the city council has a responsibility to act now. Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg
Leader of the Labour Group
