West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 6 November 2009
Royal Mail is broken
• ROYAL Mail is a broken organisation, some of whose staff and management have for years been conspiring against us, their customers.
For instance, I used to wonder why local letterboxes with Sunday collections seldom or never displayed a “SUN” tab in the door after the Saturday midday collection.
Drivers I asked about it gave shifty answers, but the local postmaster eventually explained that if the Sunday drivers shared the shift money with them, the Saturday drivers, who worked from a different depot, would agree to put a “MON” tab or none at all in the door – meaning the collections didn’t need to be done.
I proved him right by putting tape across the bottom of the pillarbox door on Saturday afternoons, and it would still be there on Monday.
Royal Mail management weren’t interested in sorting out this corrupt conspiracy, and their explanations were as evasive as their drivers’. They eventually “solved” the issue by abolishing Sunday collections. Your readers, particularly the many honest posties, could no doubt describe any amount of questionable practices connived at by management.
The current dispute will have no winners, certainly not the posting public.
Perhaps we need to start again with a Royal Mail with “New” in its name! Mike Wells
