The X factor! Oxford Circus gets Tokyo-style crossing

ONE of the world’s busiest diagonal crossings has opened in Oxford Circus.
Modelled on the Shibuya junction in Tokyo, the new design stops traffic in all directions, allowing shoppers to cross the junction diagonally in an X as well as the more conventional straight ahead.
It cost £5million to develop and it is claimed it will be able to handle double the number of pedestrians and ease overcrowding at the busy junction.
The crossing went live on Monday morning.
The New West End Company, which represents businesses in Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street, supported the scheme. Chairwoman Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas said: “We are delighted this important project has been completed just before the start of the busy Christmas shopping period with over 40 million shoppers visiting our district over the next six weeks. What a great early Christmas present for them all.”
