West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 November 2009

Wasteful!

WESTMINSTER Conservatives last week refused to sign up to the 10:10 campaign to cut the council’s carbon emissions by 10 per cent in 2010.
This is particularly worrying because, according to new figures obtained by Karen Buck MP, Westminster City Council continues to lag in the bottom 10 per cent of local authorities for recycling performance. With just 22.72 per cent of waste recycled, only 28 local authorities in the whole of England performed less well, out of 352.
To make matters worse, Westminster intends to cut its environmental services budget, and it is hard to see how such cuts will enhance its performance in this important area.
This week’s introduction of a £20 charge for the collection of bulky refuse will further increase dumping on the streets and reduce recycling.
To make a difference on climate change we need clear political leadership. It is sad that Westminster Conservatives have refused to offer leadership on this issue which is vital for us all.
cllr Paul Dimoldenberg
Leader of the Labour Group
