Camden Council has announced plans for a new school, but campaigners say it is in the wrong end of town. Special report by Richard Osley
Convent school may take boys
A CATHOLIC convent school for girls has been persuaded to break with almost 200 years of tradition and consider accepting boys for the first time – as part of Camden’s schools shake-up.
Education chiefs believe that making Maria Fidelis in Somers Town open to boys will help reduce the pressure for school pla
ces.
It is part of a package of changes they hope will make up for their decision to build a new school in Swiss Cottage rather than in the south of the borough.
The school is currently split over two sites, one in Phoenix Road, Somers Town, and the other in North Gower Street, Euston. The plan is to bring both sites together – although it is not clear where – and then bring in the boys.
Headteacher Pauline Williams said yesterday (Wednesday): “Maria Fidelis School has discussed with Camden Council the possibility that the school would recruit boys as well as girls. This change would be subject to detailed consultation and would not take place until a new school is complete sometime after 2011.”
