Property magnate Jonathan Glanz won the West End ward byelection |
Glanz victory Tory takes Wilder seat
THE Conservatives have retained their seat by picking up the lion’s share of the vote in the West End ward by-election.
Property magnate Jonathan Glanz from Wimpole Street, Marylebone, was named as a new councillor after romping to victory with 526 votes (61 per cent) last Thursday evening.
He saw off Labour’s Damian Dewhirst (20 per cent), Christopher Gonzalez for the Liberal Democrats (12 per cent) and Green Party candidate Tristan Smith (7 per cent)
The byelection was triggered following the death of long-serving councillor Ian Wilder in July.
The married father-of-one, and former chairman of the Marylebone Association admitted Mr Wilder would be a hard act to follow and has wasted little time setting about his priorities, with unscrupulous landlords and licensees in the firing line. Mr Glanz has also pledged to attract more families back to central London.
He said: “The West End is the centre of the universe but we have got some things wrong. It’s not about stopping licensed premises all together, but regulating them.”
Voting turnout was 12.53 per cent.
