‘I KNOW HOW THEY FEEL INSIDE’
The remarkable comment from the mother of a murdered student to the families of the young men in the gang that killed her son
THE mother of an 18-year-old student murdered by a mob in Camden Town met the parents of his killers at her home on Sunday.
The emotional meeting at her Chalk Farm home was the first step towards a reconciliation the families hope will heal a deep wound in the Somali community.
Aisha Samatar accepted the condolences of six parents of the 13 young men convicted of involvement in the savage killing of her son, Mahir Osman, in Camden High Street in January last year. “As a mother, I know how they feel inside,” Mrs Samatar said, after Ahmed Roble, whose son is serving four years, told her: “These parents are very sorry about what has happened and, if they had known, they would have stopped it.”
Somali community leader Abdul Farah said the meeting – the families’ first contact outside the Old Bailey – was vital as a first stage in the traditional Somali process of conflict resolution.
It was a crucial step towards understanding how many of the community’s youth had been caught up in a cycle of violence, he added.
