Emergency powers used in fear of running street battles
POLICE were forced to declare an emergency public order crackdown as gang violence threatened to spill over into running street battles.
Groups of up to 50 youths clashed around Camden Road and St Pancras Way in fighting believed to be linked to a recent stabbing on the notorious N29 bus route near Goodge Street Tube.
Police authorised officers inside a zone covering Camden Town and Hampstead to stop and search anyone “in anticipation of violence”.
The powers, granted under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, lasted up to the weekend, after the outbreak of violence took place last Wednesday.
Camden police said the additional authority and extra patrols had quelled the trouble and potentially averted a serious incident.
Det Supt Jeremy Burton said: “We will not tolerate such youth disorder and violence in Camden and this power will be used to successfully combat these kind of disturbances in the borough.”
The council’s community safety chief, Councillor Ben Rawlings, yesterday (Wednesday) cautioned against branding all youth groups criminal, but said that gang activity appeared to be increasing.
He said: “We don’t want what we’ve seen in other parts of London where the violence just gets worse and worse – it escalates.”
