‘Our parents have to drive’ say private headteachers

PRIVATE schools have stoked anger in a row over traffic congestion in Hampstead with claims that parents should not be forced into using public transport to take their children to lessons.
They claim that buses and trains are not suitable for their primary school pupils.
Three headteachers have written to the Town Hall in a bid to stop the council from removing parking dispensations from schools. Camden is trying to cut the congestion in and around Fitzjohn’s Avenue which builds up every morning and afternoon and has led to complaints from residents.
But the schools say their parents have no alternative but to drive their children to and from class.
Deirdre Berkery, head at Broadhurst School in Greencroft Gardens, said: “Bus use is limited by a lack of buggy space. Rush hour Tube crowds are very frightening for a very small children. The children are too young to go happily on a school bus. Few parents would feel safe carrying a small child on the back of a bicycle.”
The council are due to review the system again later this year.
